New Wild Flower Garden Project

The City of Glenn Heights is pleased to announce an effort to turn a small patch of land into a wild flower garden! The small grassy lawn that sits next to the Family Life Center is currently in progress to become the site for a small natural wild flower garden. The process of converting a piece of land like this into a place for wildflowers is a patient one, that may take a few years to develop into a space that hosts wild natural Texas flowers ever year, but we are committed to making it happen. This process has many stages, and the lawn may at times look over grown or unkempt, but please know this is in a great effort and being done intentionally so give the flowers and wild grasses the best chance to grow. WILD FLOWER GARDEN

Location

The field that sits next to the Family Life Center will be the site that is used for the wild flower garden.

Flowers and Wild Grasses

The seed mix that is being used is a mix designed for the Blackland Prairies, which is where the City of Glenn Heights falls. This mix has a wide variety of flowers and grasses that are native to Texas and are well suited for this climate which will aide in the success of the gardened growth.

Project Timeline

Wild flower growing season starts in the fall, so progress has been made as of October 2025 in preparation for the spring growing season. As the season moves into winter and then spring, the lawn will hopefully show the different stages of a successful grow. Experts in wild flowers and neighboring DFW municipalities that grow wild flowers do send a caution to new projects that the flowers and the garden look that would appear on a photograph may take a few years to make. The key to success is to keep with the project to see results. Here is the general layout of the project timeline

  • September-October 2025
    • The Lawn is treated of weeds on a bi-weekly bases to remove the aggressive growing plants and leave room for the seeds to germinate
  • November 2025
    • The Lawn is mowed at the lowest setting the mowers can go to clean away large growths and open up the ground for seed dispersal.
    • Debris, dead weeds, and other obstructions to be removed
    • De-thatching done to remove top soil layer that is compacted from dead grass, and the dead grass is raked away. This opens soil for the seeds to make contact with and hopefully grow.
    • Seed Dispersal - a mixture of Texas native flowers and grasses is mixed with clean sand and dispersed all over the field. The spread of the seeds needs to be even and over seeded to give the plants a better chance.
    • Seed Rolling - a roller is then used to push the seeds gently into the soil so that they can start to germinate
    • Watering field twice a day to keep new seeds moist. (Hopeful for rain!!) Watering stations will be set up in the field and will go off at least twice a day for a few weeks.
  • December 2025
    • Monitoring lawn for weeds and unwanted growth, by using a potted mix from the seed bag to identify what is growing. At the time of seed dispersal, a small amount of seeds is taken and put into a potted plant alone with soil. This is used to monitor what grows out in the field by matching the potted plant growth with the sprouts that hopefully grow in the field.
    • Late-December the field will be mowed for the first time at a high setting to ensure a good start to the spring growing season
  • March 2026
    • Spring is coming, and hopefully new growth for the wildflowers that started their growth in the fall.
    • Weeds will be pulled if needed, or high setting mowing to clear high growth plants. Important reminder that this lawn is designed to not be mowed to become a wild flower garden, so please excuse the look if it looks un-mowed. This is the idea behind the garden itself!
    • Monitor rain levels and supplement with sprinklers if needed
    • Let the Garden Grow! Using the potted plant or images of plants, we will identify which plants are growing in the field and which are not to adjust the seed balance for the fall seed dispersal
  • October 2026
    • Clear the field with a mower at 4-6 inches to disperse the seeds from any plants that grew during the season.
    • Clear dead grasses and pull weeds
    • Re-seed once more in the same manner as last year
  • Future
    • Monitor the land for weeds and redistribute seeds as needed for the first few years to hopefully move to the field being self-sustaining
