[ARCHIVED] The City of Glenn Heights mourns the passing of Mayor Curtistene S. McCowan.

Senior Center Ribbon Cutting f. Mayors

It is with deep sadness that the Mayor and Glenn Heights City Council share the passing of DeSoto’s Mayor, Curtistene S. McCowan.  She was 72.  A staple in the DeSoto community, she is forever etched into the Glenn Heights community as her namesake school, Curtistene S. McCowan Middle School, resides in the Kingston Meadow neighborhood.

A servant leader, McCowan was very active within the DeSoto community for over thirty years.  She was the first African-American elected to public office in DeSoto when she won a seat on the DeSoto ISD Board of Trustees in 1990 where she served for six years, two of those years as President.  She served on the DeSoto Economic Board of Development Corporation Board of Directors and had served on the DeSoto City Council since May of 2012 prior to running for Mayor.  She served as Mayor since 2016 and was in the midst of her second term at the time of her passing.  Mayor McCowan was a dear friend, a graceful and compassionate leader and a giving public servant.  We mourn alongside our Best Southwest neighbor, DeSoto.  Mayor McCowan will be missed by her neighbors in Glenn Heights.
