Winter Weather Preparedness Checklist
Travel & Transportation
- Travel only if necessary
- Avoid overpasses and bridges, which freeze faster than regular roadways.
- Winterize your vehicle (Flush the cooling system and replace coolant, check the battery, and replace windshield wiper blades
- Keep your gas tank full in case travel becomes unavoidable.
- Create a Winter Weather Emergency Kit for your car in case you’re stranded (blankets, flashlight, water, snacks, phone charger).
Clothing & Personal Safety
- Dress in multiple layers of loose-fitting, lightweight, warm clothing.
- Make sure outer layers are water-repellent.
- Don’t forget hats, gloves, scarves, and insulated footwear to prevent frostbite and hypothermia.
Home & Utilities
- Allow faucets to drip slowly when temperatures fall below freezing.
- Prepare for extended cold by having extra blankets and warm layers, non-perishable food and water, and needed medications
- Plan ahead for closures
Heating & Ventilation
- Ensure your heating system is working properly and well ventilated.
- Have heating equipment serviced regularly.
- Place carbon monoxide detectors near gas heating systems and water heaters.
- Never use grills or gas appliances indoors for heat.
Pets & Animals
- Bring pets indoors whenever possible.
- Provide adequate food and fresh water.
- Ensure animals have warm, dry shelter protected from wind and cold.
- Check outdoor animals frequently for signs of distress.
